Crash test: 1959 Chevy Bel Air
Bel Air are both going 40 mph and the vehicles collide offset, driver side to driver side. This is the same crash configuration represented by the Institute’s 40 mph frontal offset barrier test, which is used to rate the frontal crash performance of new cars. For information comparing the safety performance of new vehicles, go to the Institute’s website at www.iihs.org/ratings/default.aspx. … classic car Chevrolet Impala vehicle crash test frontal driver side Malibu Bel Air Insurance Institute …

You said “Chevy is the best brand in auto history” therefore your saying yes it is.

Engines removed? Bullshit! These cars are factory as they would appear on the road thus giving the most realistic and true safety data results. Removing the engine my ass. That’s the dumbest comment yet.

Ebonics fail in 3, 2, 1… lol j/k.

I want to see that with a Packard ( any 50’s model -straight 8 better yet) and the new Chevy. You won’t see a repeat of this I bet. Not sure this is really staged to cover Chevy’s ass-er what used to be Chevy. Take out key beams and you get this.

How sad to Destroy a perfectly good 1959 Chevy Bel Air. Yea, It’s not very safe but man they knew how to make a car look cool back in those days compared to now. The new stuff they got going on now just sucks. All bland, no imagination. It all looks the same. What car would you say has a great design in todays market?

Wow, amazing. Today’s vehicles ARE safer. The Malibu’s interior was intact! Perhaps both cars were totaled, but the Malibu driver, appeared to survive!! Thank God for new and better ideas!

well that 59 is really wide, and 2/3 of the front end of the 59 is just sheet metal, and one frame rail underneath. if you look closely you can see the most of the fender on the 59 was directly in line with the malibu’s engine, most of the force was spread out on the malibu’s firewall(good engineering). if this were a side collision, the older 59 would be the victor almost every time.

Did I say Chevy was better than volvo? No.

Trust me…I’ve been involved in the auto industry for nearly 20 years. Most old cars only “look the part”. Thick sheet metal does not equate to structure strength. The inherent shortcoming in a body on-frame design will always be the actual body strength. The entire body is basically a crumple zone which will never be conducive to occupant well being. The high strength safety cage in modern vehicles will always trump the weak ladder frame chassis and weak body structures of old cars.

September 21st, 2009 at 3:46 am
What an ignorant Dumb***. You will die in that crash. A fake Be Air would cost more than a real one!! The instramentation cost more than the car. I Own a 65 Corvair convertible and I don’t want to hit anything with that. It will outstop and out corner my 04 Toyota!!however!
September 21st, 2009 at 3:46 am
Go ahead…keep talking…you’re getting dumber by the moment.
September 21st, 2009 at 3:46 am
That is no way to do a beautiful 1959 Chevrolet. What a disgusting waste!!!
September 21st, 2009 at 3:46 am
